Retro
The
Retro period was an unstable period in the jewelry production in the United States
and Europe. With europe at war, most of the jewelry firms in Europe were shut down and
many of the European designers moved operations to the USA. At the same
time that the United States was in an economic
recovery, most of Europe was in a depression. Now, the marketplace for
jewelry in the USA became an important forefront .
Incorporating designs
from previous periods, jewelry took on an American look, using bows, flowers, bows, and
designs from past period jewelry, but with an American flair. Now, Hollywoods
movie stars became trendsetters as royal families had in the past. Now jewelry from the mid
30's until the late 40's became bigger and bolder than ever before.
Aquamarine, citrines, topaz, and
many other synthetic gemstones became very poplular, including the use of
large gemstones some even over 100 cts! Since platinum was needed to fund
the war, Rose gold became very poplular during this period.
Following World War II,
platinum came
back and the us of rose gold diminished, as well as traditional designs
came back. The Retro styles of being big, bold went out of style, and were replaced by the more tailored styles of
the 1950's and 60's.
